GENERAL INFORMATION JIMENA DE LA FRONTERA, CADIZ
(Population circa 6,500)Jimena de la Frontera is a white hilltop village (pueblo blanco) situated in western Andalucia, on the eastern edge of the Natural Park Los Alcornocales. The gleaming white buildings with their red-tiled roofs spread up the hill to its craggy summit upon which sits an ancient Romano-Moorish castle. Views from the village are spectacular stretching north to the Serrania de Ronda and south to the Rock of Gibraltar with the great bulk of Mount Reales (1452 metres) to the east.
The surrounding countryside, covered in cork oak, orange groves and aromatic plants and carpeted in flowers from early spring onwards is a delight for walkers, bird-watchers, botanists and anyone with a love of the great outdoors. Many species of wildlife can be seen at different times of the year, not least the imposing Leonados Vultures that soar above the castle.
The village is situated next to the Hozgarganta River where the visitor can enjoy swimming, as well as scenic walks on the footpaths on either side. There are two public swimming pools in the village, which has a well stocked local supermarket, numerous small shops (selling just about everything) many bars, most of which serve tapas, and several restaurants. There are various festivals hosted in Jimena; a music festival in July, a feria in August and a horse feria in May, amongst others.
Jimena is a living Andalucian pueblo where the visitor can experience a taste of authentic Spanish life whilst being within easy reach of the beaches of the Costa del Sol (30 minutes), Gibraltar (35 minutes), Malaga (1.5 hrs), the Moorish town, roman ruins and sands of Tarifa (1hr), the fabulous site and old town of Ronda (2hrs drive or 2hrs & 10 minutes by train from Estacion de Jimena) and Jerez with its many sherry bodegas and world famous equestrian school (2hrs).
